I have always been known as the girl with many jobs. I could never seem to have just one! Growing up, they varied from helping on the farm, to baling hay, to babysitting, to cleaning neighbor’s homes. In high school, I cleaned houses, babysat, taught swim lessons, was a lifeguard, and worked evenings at Dairy Queen. In college, I balanced a job, school work, and elementary classroom experience.
Once I got my second teaching job, I also took on what is now one of my favorite jobs – Coordinating TreeHouse Kids, the children’s ministry at our church (The House QC – A Local Church). I got to help build this amazing ministry from the ground up, and after the first year I got to share my role as coordinator. You would think that dividing the work would mean less work, but we wanted to make our curriculum a better fit. The only way to truly make your curriculum fit the specific kids you are working with is to write it yourself, in my opinion … which is exactly what I started doing a year ago.
In my first teaching job, I was responsible for curriculum writing in all subject areas. I hated it then, but it taught me so much and evenutally I even liked it. Now, I LOVE getting to dig in to what I feel is the most important subject – God and His love for His people – and find meaningful ways to teach our children. We also have chosen to match what the kids are learning to what the adults are learning; meaning the same scriptures and overall subject matter is being taught to all members of a family, making conversations natural in the home.
The House and TreeHouse Kids just turned 2! I am so blessed to be a part of this wonderful ministry, and to celebrate I wanted to share the first lesson of our new series on the book of Luke! Just click on the links below to download the free lesson and handout!
Our kids program runs from PreK (3) – 5th grade right now, and our main lesson takes place together. I try to write lessons that have nuggets of information for all ages and that speak to all the learning styles in some ways. I also try to write lessons so that teachers can adapt them to their specific teaching style – the more comfortable the teacher, the more the kids will learn!
This lesson is set up in a way that other groups, families, or individuals should be able to take it and make it work for their space and time frame. It will work for a Sunday school setting or homeschool setting with very little adaptation!
I hope to make the Luke series available for purchase at some point, so if you use this lesson I’d love your feedback!
If you like the material, be sure to share it and link back here so I can answer any questions.
