Hello, hello! It’s finally feeling more like spring, and I’m still on a spring cleaning and decluttering kick. I’ll probably keep it up through May because, well, we have a lot of junk.
This month, I decided to just focus on our closets. Last month, I didn’t get as much done as I wanted but I did get the top shelves in my and Logan’s rooms cleaned out! I also finally got the gallery wall in the living room and in Logan’s room laid out. Now to hang it.
I didn’t have as much time to declutter as I thought I would in March. My spring break filled up pretty quickly, in the best way! Hubby was home more (yay!) so evening cleaning was pushed back so we could spend time together. Also, my love of reading was reignited in February thanks to my TV Free month… and I chose to read over clean and sort several times. Oops.
Define your why
This is something I’ve been focusing on alot. Why is this room or space bothering me? Why do I want this space to be different? Why do I want to make changes?
I’ve been really focused on creating a place that my family can come home to and feel at rest. I want the spaces to be functional for our family in the stage we are in, which requires flexibility (and toy storage in all the places). I want to declutter physically because it helps me to declutter mentally.
And when I stay focused on why it matters that our space gets refreshed, it’s a lot less daunting and a lot more fun!
This month, I’m focusing on our closets. There’s only four in our little apartment, so I want what is in them to be organized and super functional for our needs right now.
Start small.
Don’t take on your entire house, or even an entire room at once. Choose a small space, corner or surface that has been driving you bonkers. Starting with just one small area helps you stay focused, limits distractions, and keeps you from getting overwhelmed.
Get Started.
Just do it. Choose a space/room/corner, pick a time (nap time for me!) and get to work. Listen to some music or your favorite podcast and focus in.
Don’t be afraid to pull everything out and get a little more messy. It’s really the only way to see everything you’ve got. Sort things out and make it a rule not to put anything back that doesn’t have a home there. For me, this is going to involve going through some bins, sorting through old clothes, and going through our medicine.
